It’s official — the King is coming back to Sydney.

A return season of Disney’s blockbuster musical The Lion King was announced today by the NSW Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Arts — George Souris.

The Lion King closed at the Captiol Theatre in June 2005, and will “come home” to Capitol stage from December 2013, for an anticipated 8 month season.

While Schumacher and Souris didn’t rule out the possibility of an Australian tour they did stress that no plans had been made at this point beyond Sydney.

“It is logical that we can go to other cities”, said Schumacher, live from Times Square, NYC via Sattelite, “but the plan is not fixed yet”.

Casting will commence further down the track, but Shumacher did suggest that the show would feature “an Australian cast peppered with international artists”, citing performers of both South African and Maori heritage as possibilities.
